The Origin of Our Name: "Forrest's Escort" was a Company of 60-100 men
hand-picked by General Nathan Bedford Forrest to serve at his side.. They
were charged with protecting the person of Gen. Forrest.. Not an easy task,
given the General's habit of "leading from the front" and being in the thick of
the fight. They were also very good at "foraging". Mostly from the enemy.
Anything the General needed, they got. They were sometimes referred to as
"The Forty Thieves", and it was said of them that "They were as good at
fighting as there were at foraging.. And, at foraging they had no equal"

Our living history unit has been around for since 1999 , starting out as the 41st Tennessee Infantry "Rough
and Readies" using the same two band Enfields as were used by the original unit. When we showed-up
with these weapons, we were often not allowed to take the field because only three band rifles were
allowed. If they did let us play, we were often sent over to the dismounted cavalry, where we found out to our
amazement, that we enjoyed using pistols and taking cover, when any was available, bushwhacking and
generally fighting as our ancestors did in the War Between the States.
As time went by, we found ourselves with the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, forming Company E of that unit,
armed with both a full scale 3" Ordnance Rifle and a 6 pdr. Breech loading Whitworth as part of our
company. While with the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, we then decided it was time to go our own way and
represent the men from our own back yard. At that time we found out that the Division Cavalry Brigade, Inc.
was the best or one of the best in the hobby, appearing in numerous documentaries and films. In short, to
our delight, we applied and were accepted into the Brigade.
We now represent the very best Cavalry Company on either side of the great conflict – General Bedford
Forrest's hand picked body guard from Lincoln and Bedford Counties, Tennessee, also known as J. C.
Jackson's Tennessee Cavalry Company, or just plain "Forrest's Escort Company".
Our company consists of mounted, dismounted and artillery troopers. We have a British Blakely Rifle and a
wagon. It is our objective to field eight mounted eight dismounted troopers and a 3.5" Blakely Rifle crew for
the upcoming reenactment season. You will see our Company at exclusive events like Sacremento,
Richmond, Perryville, Kentucky, as well as at Bridgeport, Decatur, Alabama and Olustee Florida and many
more.
Reenacting is a great hobby for the entire family or for the individual, mounted or dis-mounted (no horse).
Our living history unit participates in battles reenactments, parades, school events, Memorial services, Movie
appearances and much more. Do you like sitting around a camp fire and camping? This is a chance to do it
1860's style. Camp life, cooking, drill, weapons and equipment, entertainment will all bring you back in time
to the 1860's. If you would like to join our unit, by all means get in touch with us as soon as possible; but
remember, you will be portraying the best unit to ever take the field in the War Between the States.
